Benzyl alcohol is a colorless, slightly oily liquid with a mild, pleasant odor and a bitter, slightly numbing taste. The compound is highly soluble in most organic solvents and also exhibits significant solubility in water. Benzyl alcohol slowly oxidizes to benzaldehyde when exposed to air. Benzyl alcohol is found in various essential oils. The esters of benzyl alcohol with various monocarboxylic acids possess aromatic properties; these include, for example, benzyl acetate and benzyl benzoate.

Uses of Benzyl Alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is one of the most important solvents in the paint and ink industry. It dissolves cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, fats, oils, and resins and is an approved extraction and reactive solvent in numerous construction chemicals. It is also a component of paint strippers.

As an additive, benzyl alcohol is used in ballpoint pen inks. Furthermore, it is used as a dyeing aid, disinfectant, viscosity regulator, and development accelerator in color photochemistry.

In pharmacy, benzyl alcohol serves as a preservative for injection solutions.

Benzyl alcohol is an important starting material for the production of esters.
